Mr. Allen Dressler was appointed Director of Parks & Recreation on March 1, 1993. Mr. Dressler is a native of Covington and a 1980 graduate of Covington High School. In 1984, Mr. Dressler received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Resource Management from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Mr. Dressler is a member of the Mountain, Soil and Water Conservation District and was recently named Conservationist of the Year for Alleghany County, Bath County and Covington. Mr. Dressler has also been recognized as a life member of the National Registry of Who's Who.
The Department of Recreation shall be composed of a director of recreation and such other employees as the City Manager may determine. The Department of Recreation shall be responsible for providing, conducting and supervising public playgrounds, play fields, indoor recreation centers and other recreation areas and facilities owned or controlled by the city. The Department of Recreation shall have the power to conduct any form of recreation or cultural activity that will employ the leisure time of the people in a constructive and wholesome manner. The City of Covington Parks & Recreation Department maintains 60 acres of park and playground areas which geographically span the entire city. Included are eight athletic fields which are used for Little League sports, adult sport activities and our city stadium, Casey Field. In addition to the maintenance of parks and playgrounds, the Recreation Department maintains the grounds around five municipal buildings, median strips and landscapes seasonal flowers and plants throughout the city limits.
The Parks and Recreation Department includes the Recreation Director, Jane Tucker, Administrative Secretary; John Hutcheson, Crew Supervisor; Thomas Ferrell, Kevin Pettitt, Alvin Boguess, Steve Fox and Kevin Parr Laborers.; Seasonal employees include lifeguards, maintenance personnel, facility supervisors and paid temporary personnel to assist with officiating, clock operations, gate collections and score keeping.
