Treasurer

Eunice Dressler Wright, TreasurerEunice Dressler Wright, Treasurer for the City of Covington was sworn into office in January, 1986.  She is a lifelong resident of Covington and graduated from Covington High School in 1970.  Eunice continued her education at National Business College in Roanoke and graduated in 1972 with emphasis in Computer Technology.  Ms. Wright graduated from Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in 1985 with emphasis in office management.  Ms. Wright has taken additional courses at Bluefield State College, JRTC, and the UVA Center for Public Studies.  Ms. Wright was among the first in the Commonwealth to become a Certified Government Treasurer;  recertified in June, 2002 and in August, 2006.

Ms. Wright has served the Treasurer's Association in the past and is presently serving her third term as Chairwoman for the 7th District.  Previously, she served as Awards Chairman and Convention Chair.  Ms. Wright is a member of the Virginia Treasurer's Association and the Virginia Association of Local Elected Constitutional Officers, and the VA Governmental Employees Association.  Wright is a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, a member of VGW Post #1033 and volunteers for local organizations.

In addition to the municipal officers, there shall also be a treasurer elected by the qualified voters of the city.  The Treasurer shall have such powers and perform such duties and receive such compensation as is provided by the constitution of the commonwealth, and except as is otherwise provided in the chapter, as is provided by the provision of the general law for cities.  Such duties shall include collection of funds due the city, use of designated depositories, accounting of funds and appropriations to which warrants are chargeable, register of warrants, receipt of tax payments, custodian of Cedar Hill Cemetery fund, and report monthly to city council the receipts and expenditures.

The office of the Treasurer has three full-time employees:  Carolyn Tyree Ross, MGDT, Chief Deputy; Theresa A. Harrison, Deputy and Kathleen J. Walker, Deputy.  The staff completed training on Irms, External Entity Secure Messaging Center (EESMC) and Tax Agency Rules & Procedures (TARP).
